and Holy Week Services
and Events,
2005
Dear People of God:
The first Christians observed with great devotion the days of our Lord's passion and resurrection, and it became the custom of the Church to prepare for them by a season of penitence and fasting. This season of lent provided a time in which converts to the faith were prepared for Holy Baptism. It was also a time when those who, because of notorious sins, had been separated from the body of the faithful were reconciled by penitence and forgiveness, and restored to the fellowship of the Church. Thereby, the whole congregation was put in mind of the message of pardon and absolution set forth in the Gospel of our Saviour, and of the need which all Christians continually have to renew their repentance and faith.
I invite you, therefor, in the name of the Church, to the observance of a holy Lent, by self-examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and self-denial; and by reading and meditating on God's holy Word.

WEDNESDAY EVENING LENTEN PROGRAM

This year we will have our customary Wednesday Vespers, Simple Soup and Salad Suppers, and Lenten lectures. Our schedule on Wednesday evenings is as follows:

Vespers at 6:30, in the chapel, followed by Supper at 7pm, in the undercroft,
and our Program at 7:30pm in the chapel.

Michael Ramsey, Archbishop of Canterbury from 1961 until 1974, is considered by many to be among the greatest of the over 100 men to hold that office. While in residence at Nashotah House Seminary after his retirement he gave a series of addresses on "The Anglican Spirit" which were later published in a book.
At a time when the issues of Anglican identity and the organizational aspects of the Anglican Communion are under serious discussion, it seems appropriate that we consider, together, what is the spirit of Anglicanism. What is characteristic of our particular brand of Christianity, not just in matters of vocabulary or organization, abut in mind and spirit? Our Wednesday evening Lenten program will attempt to address these questions.
Father Bragg will offer five presentations combining many of Ramsey's insights with comments and reflections of his own. The themes of the five talks will be:
February 16 Michael Ramsey and the Anglican Spirit
February 23 The Foundations in England and America
March 2: The Astonshing Ninetenth Century
March 9 Two Great Archbishops
March 16 Wher now? What next?
