At St. Andrew’s, we offer a way for families to take a break from the hectic Northern Virginia schedule and grow together in the Christian faith by offering unique opportunities to worship God, learn our stories, enjoy fellowship and make a difference as part of a joyful and caring community. And we make sure to have fun doing it!
We offer a unique worship style for families to convey how important God is in our lives and experience the mystery of God’s love and power. The Family Service of the Word at 10 am begins in the nave with the contemporary service and then those wishing to participate move to the Chapel for singing and listening of the Word before returning to the nave for the Eucharist. Open to worshipers of all ages, the Family Service is particularly well suited for little ones who wish to participate actively in prayer and wonder or for those who are unfamiliar with Episcopal worship or who might want an alternative to the adult sermon.
Education is how we learn the stories of our faith tradition. Throughout the week we send families resources to continue the conversation about that week’s Gospel lesson and “prayer starters.” Once a month we offer “Christian Education for All,” an intergenerational discussion on a particular theme, which is then reinforced through age-appropriate instruction. We also offer confirmation classes for youth in preparation for our bi-annual Bishop’s Visitation as well as communion preparation classes for children as desired.
Fellowship is a cornerstone of St. Andrew’s identity and nurturing of our community, particularly for our newest generation of parishioners. Our signature fellowship for our 6th to 12th graders is St. Andrew’s Youth (SAY). SAY gathers twice a month: either at St. Andrew’s for Food, Fun, Fellowship and Formation or at an outing to serve the community – such as sorting food at AFAC – or have fun – such as snow tubing. We also participate in the Diocesan youth events, including Parish Youth Ministries weekends at Shrine Mont and the Service Days. SAY typically meets on Sundays from 11:30 am to 1 pm. Friends are always welcome!
We make a difference through service to our community and to the world. From working in our community garden to grow fresh vegetables for the hungry in Arlington, to raising money for our mission to Haiti, to gathering school supplies for our neighbors in need, families at St. Andrew’s are always involved with helping others. We have fun through community – celebrating the life that God has given us and having a blast doing so. Cookouts, weekend retreats at Shrine Mont, pool parties, family fun nights and just playing outside after church in our wonderful playground – always with great food – is what we do. The only thing missing is YOU!
